Although there is a wide range of fasteners these tend to fall into three
basic categories Nuts, Bolts and Screws :
Nuts :
Generalisation : Hexagonal headed parallel threaded fastener for use
with a Spanner / Socket.
A nut is a type of hardware fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost
always used opposite a mating bolt to fasten a stack of parts together. The
two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads' friction,
a slight stretch of the bolt, and compression of the parts. In applications
where vibration or rotation may work a nut loose, various locking mechanisms
may be employed: Adhesives, safety pins or lockwire, nylon inserts, or
slightly oval-shaped threads. The most common shape is hexagonal, for
similar reasons as the bolt head - 6 sides give a good granularity of angles
for a tool to approach from (good in tight spots), but more (and smaller)
corners would be vulnerable to being rounded off. Other specialized shapes
exist for certain needs, such as wing nuts for finger adjustment and captive
nuts for inaccessible areas.
Bolts :
Generalisation : Hexagonal headed parallel threaded fastener for use
with a Spanner / Socket.
A bolt is an externally threaded fastener designed for insertion through
holes in assembled parts, and is normally intended to be tightened or
released by torquing a nut. A standard bolt has a thread length typical of
2x Diameter up to 120mm then a typical thread length of 2.25x Diameter. A
set-bolt (also known as a set-screw) is an externally threaded fastener
capable of being inserted into holes in assembled parts, of mating with a
preformed internal thread or forming its own thread, and of being tightened
or released by torquing the head and is fully threaded.
Screws :
Generalisation : Various headed taper threaded fastener for use with a
Screwdriver
An externally threaded fastener that has thread form which prohibits
assembly with a nut having a straight thread of multiple pitch length is a
screw.
Machine Screws :
Generalisation : Various headed parallel threaded fastener for use with a
Screwdriver
An externally threaded fastener that has thread form which allow assembly
with a nut having a straight thread of equal pitch length is a machine
screw.
Socket Screws :
Generalisation : Hexagonal recessed headed parallel threaded fastener
for use with a Hexagonal Wrench.
These fasteners are very similar to hex bolts. They differ mostly in that
they are manufactured to tighter tolerances than the corresponding bolts.
The most common types in use have a hexagonal recessed drive with a
cylindrical head whose diameter is nominally 1.5 times (1960 series design)
that of the screw shank (major) diameter.

Coach [Carriage] Bolts : Has a domed or
countersunk head, and the shank is topped by a short square section under
the head. The square section grips into the part being fixed (typically
wood), preventing the bolt from turning when the nut is tightened.
Coach Screws : Similar to a wood screw except
that it is generally much larger running to lengths up to 15 in (380 mm)
with diameters from 0.25–0.5 in (6.3–13 mm) in commonly available sizes and
it generally has a hexagonal drive head.
